Massacre by night: Slugs eat the lot

Overwintering cauliflowers ruined by slug

Bastard, bastard, bastard.

These were my overwintering cauliflowers.  I left them on the patio floor, by mistake, for just one night. Too late to sow any more, so no Spring cauliflowers next year.

Shit, shit, shit, shit, shit.

The fat, smug, belching sonofabitch you see in this picture has departed this life. Naturally, I tortured it first.

You could still buy new plants if you wanted to. Organic Plants ( are still despatching winter caulis, and I have used them in the past (for PSB and leeks) and they were good.

I know EXACTLY how you feel…mine was snails…and on the kids seedlings…THEY DESERVE TO DIE!!!!!!!!!

  3. Clare Says:

I was just about to say exactly what Emma said. They are very good – I know because I’m usually not organised enough to sow stuff from seed in the first place or when I have I’ve had the same slug trouble you talk about here.

Be not without caulis – I know how much you like them.

  4. Soilman Says:

Emma: That is a top, top suggestion. I’m on it.

Jeez, where would I be without you guys?

  5. Carrie Says:

I like to kill them slowly by putting them in the compost bin and llike lobsters they eat away and think, ummm, it’s lovely and warm and then, hey! it’s a little hot now, CRAP I can’t get out = DEATH!! It’s just my buddhist way… Other than that I cut my 1st one in 2 yesterday with scissors and I didn’t feel too bad….. Bastards

  6. Caz Says:

Personally, when feeling stressed, I go down the garden with a good pair of secateurs and snip the little sods in half… now I know Soilman that you may think this is a bit sick but really it is very satisfying when all that black ooze comes out of them… kinder to the slug than pellets for those of you who are squeamish

  7. Manor Stables Veg Plot Says:

That slug was the kind I hate the most – with the differing colour skirt on it – WHY are they so fat looking? I do what Caz does – pair of scissors, SNIP, goooooo, dead. Or salt. Watch them melt. Evil b*stards.

  8. allotment blogger Says:

I hate them. Nearly as much as I hate caterpillars which are currently destroying my brassicas – people say pick them off and squash them, but there are hordes of the bloody things!

Oh no, I feel your pain, and a bit of the slugs.
