If you’re unlucky enough to have caught my rantings on Twitter, you’ll know we’ve had rain in south-eastern England.

A fair bit, I’m relieved to report: more than an inch on Sunday night and some good, strong, prolonged showers since.

But you won’t be surprised to hear that I’m not hanging out the bunting… yet. After four months of almost total drought, even the 3-4cm of rain we’ve had in the last few days is a piffling drop in the ocean.

I did a bit of digging on my vegetable plot last night, and the ground is still utterly dry below half a spade’s depth.

We need a LOT more rain where that lot came from.

PS One very good thing about the rain is that it’s arrived just in time to bulk up the early new potatoes. A heartfelt ‘thank you’, then, to the Higher Power.

Isn’t it forecast for more this weekend ‘darn sarf’? I’m hoping so, I’m waiting a bit longer on digging my earliest new potatoes but getting really impatient… I need some spudness NOW!

So glad to hear it. May more come soon. Our spring showers have slowed way down now. Too bad I’m hooking up a catch system for rain water next week (700 gallons). Don’t expect to get much this year.

    Jealous – please send soonest.
(not to the seaside on Saturday though)

We still haven’t had much rain either….but unlike the rest of the country seems to be reporting we still have plenty of moisture beneath and things seem to be growing quite nicely…especially the weeds!!

ditto here! My garden was under 4 inches of water a little while back after 24 hours of rain. It is still bone dry just a few inches under the soil. My new potatoes are enjoying it too. I am digging them while they are still ‘new’ rather than waiting till they get old and crumbly (like me!)
