Yellow beetroot: I was wrong. SO wrong.

Well, well. Blow me. I was wrong about the cylindrical yellow beetroot.

Turns out they’re delicious. Better than red beetroot – sweeter and softer, plus bigger and easier/faster to grow. Incredible.

So they’re brilliant and I heartily recommend you grow them. Just one problem: I can’t for the life of me remember what the fuck they’re called. Or which company sells them. Or in fact any useful detail whatsoever.

Still. A crop that’s great to eat AND absurdly easy to grow. That’s a first in the Soilman Allotment Experience.

I’ll be jiggered. Stone the crows. Fuck my boots (etc).

Postscript: I think – I THINK – they must be these. At least, they definitely look like this.

  1. They’ll be foreign too. Almost certain that is. Yellow indeed. Bloody cheek and foreign too. Tho I might have said that. Tasty you say? That proves it. I might be persuaded perhaps. Possibly. Easy to grow. Survives monsoons. Or lack of sunlight and interminable Spring drear. Slug hardy ?

Oh well, fuck it. Let’s give it a go. Might get something to eat.

  2. I’m definitely going to give them a go next year as I’m also guessing that they don’t turn your pee purple when you eat too much.

  3. I’m doing ordinary beetroot and also some golden beetroot, neither of which I have ever grown before (at least not successfully) I don’t think my golden beetroot is cylindrical though, I wonder if it’s the same thing? So far the red has outgrown the golden.

    • I’ve tried the golden ones, Rachael (Burpees Golden), but failed to get decent germination several times. Gave up.

These are categorically not the same; germinated absurdly quick at 100% rate and grew like buggery from the off….

  4. I was really unhappy with the different beetroot I grew last year, But I am going to take your word for it SM and I will give these a go next year..thanks for the tip. Oh and it’s nice to see you having a good rant for a change!! ;-)

You tease! I cannot find this beet from your link. I’ve no luck so far with any type of beet in my garden…
